Four steps
- Type. Say what kind of place it is and scan the card. Point the camera at the barcode or QR and hold still; it reads live, tells you what kind of code it is, and fills in the number. No camera? Use a photo. Everything is decoded on your phone and never uploaded.
- Template. Pick one of 418 designs, from neon and brutalist to Pride, motorcycle and anime, or tap Surprise me.
- Design. Drop in the logo and the pass takes its colors. Change the pattern, add stickers or any emoji, choose the lettering, then size and place each piece. Or just type on the pass itself.
- Add. Put your name and photo on it if you like, then one tap to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Test it once at the desk while you still have the card.
What each piece becomes on the pass
The preview is Apple Wallet's store card layout, piece for piece. This is what comes from your design and what Wallet draws itself.
- Header. The logo, in a box up to 160 by 50 points, with the place's name beside it: the name itself when it is 20 characters or fewer, its initials when longer, so Wallet never cuts it short. Top right, the MEMBER label and your tagline, Check-in unless you type one.
- Strip. The band across the middle, 375 by 123 points, is your artwork as pixels: the pattern, the stickers, the lettering (the place's name or its initials) and your photo in its circle. Wallet prints your name over the strip's left end in its own type (Member if you leave the name blank), which is why the pieces start out right of center.
- Fields. MEMBER OF (or LOCATION, if you set one), MEMBER NO. and POWERED BY, in Wallet's type and your label color. With a QR or Aztec code they share one row; with a barcode or PDF417 they take two. The preview follows the same rule.
- Code. A white panel Wallet draws from the number. QR, PDF417, Aztec and Code 128 are drawn as they are; Code 39, EAN, UPC, ITF, Codabar and Code 93 are re-encoded as Code 128 with the same characters. The number is printed under the code when it is 32 characters or fewer.
- Back. Behind the dots on the pass: the member number, a note that the pass was made by you and is not issued by the place, the place's website if you gave one, and a link back here for a new pass.
- Google Wallet. The same strip artwork as the card's hero image and the logo as a round tile, with Google's own layout for the text. Google Wallet keeps the card's original code type (Code 93 and UPC-E become Code 128). The colors are yours in both.

Good to know
- How many designs are there?
- 418, in 28 collections: neon, brutalist, minimal, retro, vaporwave, cyberpunk, Y2K, luxury, pastel, outdoors, ocean, space, Pride, motorcycle, anime, gaming, street, team spirit, climbing, fitness, yoga, running and cycling, books, art, pets, fun and music. Browse them in step 2 or in the design library, and change anything once you pick one.
- Can I share my design without showing my barcode?
- Yes. Share your design under the pass makes a picture of it with the barcode and member number left out, and your name and photo only if you tick the box. The link opens TapIn wearing your design, so friends can make their own; it never carries your number.
- My phone's wallet can add some cards on its own now. Why TapIn?
- Use the built-in way if a plain card is all you want. TapIn is for a pass you like pulling out: 418 designs to start from, the place's own logo and colors, twenty patterns, eight letterings, stickers and any emoji, your photo on the strip, everything editable right on the pass, and the same design in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. It reads barcodes, QR, PDF417, Aztec and Data Matrix, and it is free.
- What will the pass look like in Apple Wallet?
- Like the preview, which is Apple Wallet's store card layout. The header holds the logo and the place's name, the strip across the middle is your artwork with your name printed over its left end, three small fields sit above the code (one row with a QR or Aztec code, two with a barcode), and the code is drawn by Wallet in a white panel with the number under it. What each piece becomes has the detail.
- What do you keep?
- Nothing about you. Apple passes are signed and sent back in one request. A Google Wallet pass needs its images at a web address, because Google loads them by link, so the logo tile and the strip you designed are kept under random names, and if your photo is on the strip, it is in that image. Your name and number are never stored. While you work, this browser tab remembers what you typed and small copies of the logo and photo, so a reload or an error page does not lose them; it forgets when the tab closes, and nothing of it is sent anywhere.
- Is this the gym's or library's own app?
- No. It is a wallet pass carrying your own membership number, made by you for your own use. Your membership still lives with the place that issued the card. If it already offers a wallet card, you can still make your own here and dress it the way you like.
- Which places does it work with?
- Any gym, library, museum, zoo, warehouse club, store, pool or co-working space whose card carries a barcode or QR code. The card directory has pages for warehouse clubs, auto clubs, libraries, museums, zoos, aquariums and store loyalty cards, the gym directory for the gyms members ask about most, and the guides cover the codes and the two wallets.
- Why does my Apple pass show a different barcode than my card?
- Apple Wallet draws QR, PDF417, Aztec and Code 128 only. A card in Code 39, EAN, UPC or another one-dimensional code is re-encoded as Code 128, which carries the same characters; camera scanners read either. Google Wallet keeps the original type.
- Can I share it?
- Share this page, not the pass. Passes are marked not shareable, and a friend's number in your Wallet checks the wrong person in.
- Who made this?
- WattReach, from a climber who got tired of the key tag. It started as Go Climb for one gym. The ads on this page keep it free; there are none on the pass.
